There are two main types of gum disease
Gingivitis – reversible swelling and bleeding of the superficial gums, which can be entirely resolved by plaque removal and excellent home cleaning.
Periodontitis – a more serious condition which results in irreversible changes to the bony support of the teeth. Preventing further bone loss is very important and there are a range of treatments that can be used to achieve this.
Gum disease has also been linked to heart disease and diabetes.
